Taxonomy Genus Plagiognatha is based on a misidentified type species. Dujardin's figure of the type species Plagiognatha felis (Müller) (Pl.18, fig.3) clearly shows a Cephalodella, and the same applies for all other species originally included in this genus. Synonmy with genus Cephalodella moreover is supported by Dujardin's genus diagnosis (p.651). Dujardin's illustrated description is, however, insufficient to safely identify the taxonomic species actually involved. [details]

Diagnosis Original: "An à corps oblong, courbé et convexe d'un côté, ou en cornet obliquement tronqué en avant, et terminé en arriére par une queue plus ou moins distincte portant deux stylets. —Mâchoires à branches parallèles tournées du même côté, et recourbées vers le bord cilié, avec une tige centrale (Fulcrum) droite, très-longue, élargie à sa base. — Une ou deux points rouges oculiformes."
